Food production in the UK needs to be stepped up if future demand is to be met.

That is the opinion of Ulster Unionist agricultural spokesman Tom Elliott, who was quoted by the Fermanagh Herald as stating that there is a risk of shortages.

Figures released this year showed that just half of the food eaten in Britain is grown here, he said, adding that much of the rest will "simply not be available" before long.

The need to keep manufacturing processes updated has been highlighted by one Yorkshire-based company.

Siddall & Hilton Products, which specialises in creating fences and industrial mesh, explained that it expects to increase its market share after investing in new machinery.

The firm’s range of products is to be expanded and productivity enhanced after £2.5 million was spent on machinery for its Brighouse factory.

Nearly £80 million is expected to be spent by councils on dealing with waste this week.

The Local Government Association (LGA) encouraged people to recycle wherever possible as it noted that authorities will be left with large bills for dealing with landfill.

It is anticipated that refuse collectors will deal with 230,000 tonnes of food and 125,000 tonnes of plastic packaging over the Christmas period, in addition to cards, trees and wrapping paper.
