Costain has announced that it has received payment from the main contractor on its Belvedere energy-from-waste site, after the latter was rescued in a
deal.
The engineering and construction company was given the first payment from AE & E Inova, worth £2.6 million.
Earlier in the month, the firm had warned the stock exchange that it was still owed £22 million from the troubled company, the parent company of
which had claimed insolvency.

Manufacturers in the UK are failing to compete because they do not invest in automation, according to new research.
The study, commissioned by the Engineering and Machinery Alliance (EAMA), found that firms are falling behind their European counterparts.
Commenting on the findings, the chairman of the EAMA Martin Walder said: "By comparing UK companies with similar businesses in Germany, Spain and Sweden this study highlights our weakness in automation.

This is the opinion of Terry Scuoler, of Manufacturing Digital, following the publication of the government's Growth Review.
Published at the end of November, the government promised to back industries which show serious growth potential, particularly highlighting the importance of manufacturing.

Glasgow could become the site of the Europe’s largest energy-from-waste farm.
Some 29 hectares of land on a former farm near Newton Mearns have been designated for the £640 million project, which has been dubbed the Lifetime Recycling Village, Herald Scotland has reported.
If constructed, the facility will have the capacity to process 1. 5 million tonnes of commercial rubbish annually, supplying enough electricity for 100,000 homes.

A US-based firm has designed an online tool that can calculate machining outcomes.
The programme by Locus CAE looks at tolerance consumption, enabling manufacturers to look at each tool's contribution to the budget.
In an interview with OnlineTmd.com, IQL vice-president Michael Mariani said that the tool added a crucial dimension to deciding the "error budget".

Productivity in the manufacturing sector has grown faster than across the UK economy on average, new government data has shown.
The third quarter report from the Office for National Statistics revealed that productivity has grown eight per cent year-on-year in the sector.
In contrast, the national average for all industries in the 12 months leading up October was 1.7 per cent.

Manufacturers are seeing higher levels of pay, new industry data has shown.
A survey from the manufacturers' organisation EEF has found that pay data leading up to the end of November was up by 0.2 per cent on October.
Overall, there has been an 0.5 per cent increase since the middle of the year, from 1.5 per cent in June to 2.0 per cent at the end of November.

Manufacturers in the UK face more expenses under the proposed electricity market reforms, one industry body has said.
The new measures were announced by the Department of Energy and Climate Change earlier in the month.
Some of the proposals, which would not come into effect until 2013, included a carbon floor price to encourage investment into the sector.
