Demand for chain conveyors and other machinery could be set to rise in the UK, as research has shown the manufacturing sector to be experiencing growth.

According to a study by Markit and the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply (Cips), production increased for the seventh consecutive month in December.

And the Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) for the fourth quarter of last year, which provides an indication of operating conditions, reached its highest level since the end of 2007.

Indeed, the December figure was the greatest in 25 months.

Commenting on the report, Cips chief executive David Noble suggested that new orders have contributed to the strong performance.

"Despite operating against one of the toughest economic backdrops ever witnessed, 2009 saw the UK manufacturing sector slowly regain its footing and end the year in comparatively strong shape," he remarked.

Meanwhile, the PMI for the Eurozone reached a 21-month high at the end of 2009.
