Large numbers of Christmas trees could be recycled in London, as the mayor of the English capital has called for people to dispose of them in responsible ways.

Boris Johnson explained that the city has taken a lead by chipping the tree that stood in Trafalgar Square, in order to turn it into fertilising mulch.

And with 35 tonnes of conifers thought to be thrown away by Londoners each year, he called on residents to take advantage of their boroughs’ recycling services – the majority of which include collection.

Mr Johnson, who is also chair of the London Waste and Recycling Board, urged people "to bestow a last act of kindness to the forest of trees that have given so much pleasure in our sitting rooms and ensure they are recycled to have a more fruitful future".

Recent Local Government Association figures indicated that councils across the UK could spend nearly £80 million dealing with festive waste.
