Food production needs to be stepped up in order to safeguard the UK’s future wellbeing, the environment secretary has said.

Hilary Benn suggested that those involved in the manufacturing and supply of products, as well as in the management of food waste, have a part to play in ensuring people eat healthy food that is sustainable.

"We know that the consequences of the way we produce and consume our food are unsustainable to our planet and to ourselves," he said.

Mr Benn made the comments as he unveiled Food 2030 – the government’s food strategy.

He explained that will be clearer labelling and information for consumers will be among the main targets, along with focusing on efficient, safe food production to support rural communities.

Earlier this week, Ulster Unionist agricultural spokesman Tom Elliott was quoted by the Fermanagh Herald as stating that there is a risk of shortages if food production is not increased in the UK.
