Householders and local authorities in Wales have been praised over their efforts to reduce the amount of waste being produced.
The country’s government revealed statistics showing recycling targets are being exceeded for the current financial year.
With a benchmark of 40 per cent having been set, the data showed that the three months from July and September 2009 saw 41.1 per cent of domestic waste being recycled.
And with the figure exceeding that of the equivalent period in 2008 by 3.5 percentage points, environment minister Jane Davidson noted that over half of homes now benefit from a food waste collection service.
"This is increasing and I expect that as close to 100 per cent as possible of households will have a separate food waste collection service by 2012-13," she said.
It comes after the Local Government Association estimated that 230,000 tonnes of food waste would be dealt with in the UK this week, following the festive period.
