Further research into nanotechnology is essential if its potential for the food manufacturing process can be realised.

That is the argument made by the House of Lords Science and Technology Committee, which produced a report into the food industry’s use of nanomaterials.

It encouraged the government and research councils to ensure studies take place, with the necessary funding allocated.

The food industry was also urged to make its processes more transparent, in order to avoid a negative reaction from the public.

Chair of the committee’s inquiry Lord Krebs remarked: "The technologies have the potential to deliver some significant benefits to consumers, but it is important that detailed and thorough research into potential health and safety implications in this area is undertaken."

A commitment to increase food production in the UK was made by the government this week, with environment secretary Hilary Benn stating that the action will be needed if current consumption levels are to be sustained.
