The government has served up tough plans for food waste in a bid to move towards a more sustainable future.

Food 2030, a 20 year strategy aimed at both consumers and food manufacturers, was unveiled at the Oxford Farming Conference and includes a detailed strategy about how food will be packaged, distributed and consumed in the future.

With the UK producing an estimated 18 to 20 million tonnes of food waste, almost a fifth of which comes from food manufacturers, according to the Waste & Resources Action Programme, the way we handle our waste processing has become a cause for concern.

Food manufacturers and food processors will be expected to cut back on packaging and develop products in line with waste recycling goals.

The government also plans to outlaw the dumping of biodegradable waste to landfill, according to the Telegraph, as food waste will instead be minimised or used for bio-fuel purposes.

Introducing the plans environment secretary Hilary Benn said: "There are challenges for everyone involved in the food system, from production right through to managing food waste."

Food manufacturing is the biggest industry in the UK, employing 3.6 million people across a range of businesses.
