As the UK takes further steps to stamp out its carbon footprint, recycling companies are thriving, according to industry figures.

Associated Polymer Resources (APR), which is one of the largest plastics recycling companies in the south east, has seen increasing demand for its services from public sector bodies such as the Environment Agency and local authorities.

Faced with a string of legislative requirements and corporate responsibility, recycling has become more than just a good gesture.

Managing director Ron Wilkinson said sending waste to landfill is not only costly but it is also "environmentally undesirable" and so new solutions have been established quickly.

As a result, APR has been working alongside companies to improve their recycling services.

Using a heavy-duty shredder, called the Weima WLK12-55kW, it is able to process a range of materials including rigid plastics, plastic films, fibrous material as well as textiles, paper, cardboard and rubber.

It is hoped similar recycling operatives will help the UK to transform waste products into materials which can be used for a variety of purposes.
