Commenting on the withdrawl, Sita development head Paul Gavin told the news provider the firm had not been able to find a solution that could "deliver the aspirations of all the parties" involved.

SWDWP project director Mark Turner added that he was "disappointed" Sita had to pull out of the procurement but that there are often problems faced with a project on such a large scale.

The 25 year pfi waste contract is worth an estimated £800m.

When complete the bioenergy site will help to maintain Devon’s high levels of recycling.
