A new biorefinery plant to be built in Teeside will become one of the EU’s largest producers of animal feed, exporting over 350,000 tonnes each year.
In addition to producing high-protein feed, the £300 million pound project will also be the largest provider of green energy in Western Europe, according to the Scotsman.
Over 400 million litres of bioethanol, a form of sustainable energy, will be exported from the 22-acre site and distributed throughout Europe each year.
Excess wheat is converted into the green fuel using a complex distillery process.
Once up and running the plant will hopefully provide the UK with one-third of its fuel requirements for bioethanol and will assist the government’s aim of cutting C02 emissions by 2020.
However, the development of the plant has received a major setback over the past few weeks, caused by the severe weather.
Alwyn Hughes, chief executive of Ensus, told the news provider frozen pipes and iced-over pumps had delayed the process.
He added: "It will take us several weeks to become fully operational. You have to remember this is a massive operation."
