The manufacturing industry has welcomed plans for a recycled paper plant to be based in Manchester.
Spanish packaging firm SAICA Pack announced yesterday it is to develop a £290 million paper mill in Trafford that will create over 200 jobs for the UK paper manufacturing industry when it begins operations in 2012.
The Confederation of Paper Industries has pledged its full support to the project, hailing it as a "great opportunity" for domestic recycling production, according to a report on MRW.
Peter Seggie, CPI recovered paper sector manager, told the recycling news website: "SAICA [is a] very positive investment in the UK and will create skilled employment and reduce the UK trade imbalance in paper products."
Over 50 per cent of recovered paper is currently exported overseas for recycling, a figure which UK manufacturers hope to decrease as the home industry expands.
Once operational the SAICA Pack paper mill will produce around 400,000 tonnes of recycled paper a year, which will be used to manufacture recycled corrugated boxes.
Yesterday business secretary Lord Mandelson said the investment from the Spanish firm showed a commitment to environmental technology, which will be central to the UK growth strategy.
