Plans for a £360 million biomass power plant that could provide the majority of Edinburgh’s energy needs are due to be unveiled tomorrow.
The development proposed for Leith Docks would process around 750,000 and one million tonnes of biomass materials each year and would become Scotland’s largest infrastructure development, according to the Scotsman.
When processed the biomass materials would be converted into the equivalent of 200 megawatts of energy, as well as providing heat to neighbouring commercial properties.
Biomass facilities require several key pieces of machinery. A chain and flight conveyor could be used to transport the materials from the loading bay to the conversion facility.
Bucket elevators can help the efficiency of the biomass process by processing raw wood chips and converting them into premium wood pellets using a portable containerised system.
If passed, the Scottish plant will become the nation’s biggest renewable energy site, creating 150 construction jobs and 40 permanent jobs.
It is hoped the biomass facility would allow Scotland to reach its renewable energy targets by 2020.
