The conveyor belts have ground to an abrupt halt at a paper mill near Liverpool after financial difficulties forced the closure of the site.

Cheshire-based Bridgewater Paper Company went into administration last week, leaving some 251 employees "temporarily" redundant.

An additional 41 members of staff are still working at the site in Ellesmere Port in a bid to meet the last few orders while administrators Ernst and Young look for an investor.

Joint administrator Tom Jack said: "We continue to hold detailed discussions with a number of potential interested parties and still hope to find a buyer for the business as a going concern.

"In the meantime we are also continuing to fulfil customer orders from stock whilst the sale of the business process continues."

Each year, the factory’s production line usually passes around 220,000 tonnes of recycled paper along its conveyor belts and mobile loaders before being distributed worldwide.

The announcement comes after 400 manufacturing jobs were placed in jeopardy at a Cadbury site in Somerset following the successful takeover by US processed cheese producers Kraft.

Plant closures affect the bulk materials handling market on a wider level as they decrease the demand for specialist machinery such as en-masse conveyors, stainless steel containers and bucket elevators. ADNFCR-2798-ID-19616035-ADNFCR
