A hike in the rate of landfill tax due to come into force next month could spawn the creation of new waste handling facilities as firms look to evade the financial penalties.
As of April 1st the cost of sending a tonne of waste to landfill will increase from £40 to £48 and with the figure predicted to rise each year thereafter, businesses will be seeking new methods of waste management.
This is further supported by the government’s ambitions to reduce the amount of biodegradable municipal waste that is currently not recycled.
Some local councils have even set themselves individual targets to become waste-free by 2050.
However, if the nation is to banish all of its municipal waste, new handling facilities will need to be created to cope with the increase in productivity.
Screw conveyors, chain and flight conveyors and bucket elevators are all pieces of machinery that can allow for the smooth operation of waste discharge.
Several new recycling facilities have already been given the green light including the Greenstar WES facility in Redcar, which was recently awarded a WRAP grant to help it recycle 20,000 of mixed plastics each year.
Good news for landfill machinery manufacturers, but spare a thought for other businesses affected by the tax hike. http://www.anyjunk.co.uk/blog/boring-but-important/landfill-tax-subsidising-the-waste-industry
