Business minister Ian Lucas has donned his hard hat and steel capped boots to take a guided tour of the multimillion Wilton chemical plant in Teeside.
The MP visited the facility, which will be fully operational by the end of the year, to announce 19 projects set to receive £2.5 million in funding to develop product processes and biotechnologies at the site.
Speaking from the plant, Mr Lucas said: "The Government fully recognises the crucial role that the UK’s manufacturing base will play in growing our economy.
"Here in the north-east the regional strengths in industrial biotechnology, plastic electronics and advanced manufacturing will help the UK achieve its goal of economic growth and a low carbon economy."
He added that the chemicals industry is a growth sector, with a market potential of £12 billion in the UK alone by 2025.
The government in partnership with One North East has committed £60 million in funding for the Tees Valley development in order to support future opportunities, expansion and jobs.
