The biggest ever recycling report subjected to the government has found that recycling is the most effective method of waste management.
A study by the Waste Resources and Action Programme (WRAP), the government’s official waste and packaging agency, has disputed claims that people’s recycling efforts are in vain.
Having looked into more than 200 reports of both the materials that are recycled and the processes used to convert them, the agency concluded that recycling was the most beneficial disposal option.
WRAP stated: "This report reinforces the key conclusion of the first report that recycling of paper/cardboard, plastics and biopolymers for most indicators assessed gives more environmental benefits than other waste management options," as reported on letsrecycle.com.
It took into account seven different common materials such as paper, plastics, food, garden cuttings and wood and then critiqued the way the material was disposed of, comparing processes including composting, incineration, landfill and recycling.
The agency has called for expansion in the area, which could create recycling jobs and see the construction of new waste handling facilities, pushing the demand for bulk machinery such as steel conveyors.
