Having been initiated and popularised by a few environmentally-conscious campaigners, recycling is now big business.
According to an article in newschief.com, recycling not only makes environmental sense but is also being driven by cost-effectiveness.
"Businessmen are finding ways to use recycled items to cut costs in manufacturing. It is beginning to make good business sense to use recycled material," says the news provider.
It states that the technology associated with recycling products such as plastic and paper is driving down the price of the raw material, making it cost efficient to use recycled material.
The website predicts that over the next ten to 20 years the disposal business will be "completely different" and landfill sites will lose their prevalence.
New initiatives are underway across the UK and local authorities are thinking of ways to manage waste handling and increased demand for recycling.
A consortium of local councils in London recently proposed that the Wembley Greyhound Stadium could be regenerated into a waste handling and recycling facility by bringing in the necessary components such as steel conveyors and bucket elevators.
