UK firms involved in the food manufacturing and processing sectors could benefit from a new resource which has been launched today.

The British Retail Consortium in partnership with the Chilled Food Association (CFA) has released the Shelf-Life Guidance, a free publication aimed at helping businesses determine an accurate time period that packaged foods can be kept before they are eaten, talkingretail.com reports.

It is hoped the guidance may assist those in the powder handling and storage industry who will have a better understanding of the longevity food will have while stored in flexible bulk containers.

The news provider reveals that a coalition of organisations involved in the food industry, including the Food Standards Agency, collaborated to produce the guidance, in a bid to help firms meet European Union microbiology rules.

CFA secretary general Kaarin Goodburn told the website: "We hope it will provide vital information on how to set shelf life, what the key pre-requisites are for making ready to eat food, and the basic principles of what to look for when selecting ready to eat ingredients."

Businesses of all sizes are invited to access the resource, which is available online.
