An independent brewery in Suffolk is to host the UK’s first anaerobic digestion (AD) facility to produce energy for the national grid.
The AD plant will be housed on land belonging to brewers Adnams who will use brewery waste and other food wastes to create bio energy which can then be used to heat homes and power cars.
In addition to helping to reduce carbon emissions and landfill deposits, the AD facility will hopefully create long-term investment in the sector as it continues to expand.
Employment opportunities will arise and firms along the production line are set to benefit, from manufacturers of conveyors and elevators to the logistics and transportation sector.
Local businesses may also be able to reduce their operational costs as they will evade the heavy taxation of sending waste to landfill.
The announcement comes after the government’s environmental secretary Hilary Benn unveiled proposals to enforce a complete ban on throwing household refuse such as food into the bin.
He called for those who fail to comply to be penalised in a bid to help the UK cut its municipal waste emissions.
