A government scheme to offer financial assistance to those who implement energy efficient products and renewable energy in the home could boost the UK biomass industry.

The Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI), which is set to be introduced in April 2011, is currently under consultation but has already been welcomed by industry experts.

Dr Matthew Goodwin, director at Eco Energi, said that the initiative has meant that "what was [once] a good investment is now an excellent investment".

He added that it is likely homeowners will embrace renewable energy products such as a ground source heat pump or biomass boiler.

The RHI will also support a range of technologies, including thermal solar power, biogas and bioliquids and the injection of biomethane into the natural gas grid.

It is hoped as more people opt for renewable technologies this could garner investment in the bioenergy and biomass markets.

In addition to creating new facilities and production plants to cope with the demand, employment opportunities could open up across the industry, ranging from positions in the machinery manufacturing sector to science and transportation.
