The UK is one of 70 nations planning to take part in a European biomass conference and exhibition to be staged in France this May.

A consortium of professionals from across the UK biofuels market will be attending the five-day event in Lyon, which aims to create a detailed overview of the sector.

If UK representatives successfully pitch the technologies and facilities available in Britain this could spur a wave of investment in the sector, creating jobs, expansion and export demand.

Bulk handling machinery used in the biomass market, such as screw conveyors, chain and flight conveyors and general heavy-duty conveyors, are perhaps cheaper from UK suppliers than they are on the continent due to the weakness of the pound.

The conference could therefore provide the perfect platform to promote such products and technologies and boost the demand from overseas investors.

Conference chairman Professor Josef Spitzer said: "Presenters and participants will learn about the latest developments in these conference topics and to exchange expertise."

He said the event could prove fundamental in outlining the bioenergy options and their contribution to meeting the world’s future energy needs.
