The golden leaf has become the most recent natural products to be suggested as a source for biofuel.

According to the Boston Herald, scientists in the US believe that by using tobacco as a form of biocrop they can eliminate the fuel versus food debate, which has been a topic of much contention.

Using the tobacco plant could also come as welcome news to the embattled cigarette industry which is facing more stringent regulation, heavy taxation and a decline in the western customer base.

"Certainly tobacco could work; any plant is a potential source of biofuel," Matt Hartwig, a spokesman for the Renewable Fuels Association, told the news provider.

"I know tobacco farms have been hit hard in recent years and this may be an opportunity for some of those tobacco farmers to produce a crop that could be used in biofuel production."

Tobacco is one of a number of natural products that has been suggested as a source of biofuel.

Other materials such as algae and grass cuttings have already been debated as a viable source for the sustainable fuel, which looks set to become a main focus of development in the UK.
