A bio power plant that will process 160,000 tonnes of residual waste each year to create electricity is to open in West Yorkshire.

BioGen Power was successfully granted planning permission from local authorities to create what will be the world’s largest gasification facility at the site in Bradford, MRW reports.

Once operational, the plant will generate around 83,300 MW of electricity each year through a partnership with Energos, part of the Manchester-based energy solution provider Ener-G.

Christian Reeve, BioGen Power’s chief executive, told the news provider that the firm’s procurement of planning permission was testament to the local council’s proactive approach to waste management.

"Our approved application here will ensure that Bradford benefits from a well proven, economical, green and clean alternative to the outdated and un-environmentally friendly acceptable practice of landfill," he added.

The firm is now awaiting approvals for three further facilities, which would allow it to treat 1.5 million tonnes of waste annually through 12 gasification sites.

If all of the operations are given the green light, it could create employment in the sector as well as having an accumulative influence on the bulk materials handling industry.
