A multi-million pound waste disposal contract has moved one step closer for two firms in North Lincolnshire.

North Lincs Green Energy (NLGE) and Waste Recycling Group Ltd (WRG) have beaten off three other contenders to secure a stake in a 25-year waste handling initiative.

Instigated by North Lincolnshire Council, the contract will process 1.5 million tonnes of residual waste over its lifetime, making it one of the largest bulk waste handling facilities in the UK.

Councillor Len Foster, cabinet member for Neighbourhood, Environment and Communities, said it was one of the biggest contracts the local authority is likely ever to let.

"Subject to the formal decision, I’m delighted that two local companies are still in the running. That shows our local businesses can compete, and with the very best. And it provides local job opportunities," he commented.

Once operational, the site will handle all of the council’s waste, with solutions to also recover recyclable metals.

Those in the bulk materials handling industry could benefit from the contract as it will create employment and cross-industry business for suppliers of elevators and hoppers.
