One of the UK’s top brewers has posted a positive trading update this week.

Announcing its figures for the half-year to April 3rd, Marston’s revealed a rise in ale sales that could lead to higher production levels in the future – and greater use of conveyors at its breweries.

The company, which brews Banks’s and Marston’s Pedigree and Hobgoblin, revealed a four per cent rise in sales of its premium ales over the six-month period.

Food sales also picked up at its pub chains with like-for-like sales rising by 2.5 per cent, the update revealed.

"We remain on track to meet our expectations for the financial year and continue to see improvement in each of our trading divisions," it said.

Last month, Marston’s revealed that the first barrels of Cumberland Ale, Jennings Bitter and Sneck Lifter had begun rolling off of the conveyors at its brewery in Jennings, after it was forced to close in November following floods.
