Labour has today revealed detailed plans about how to create a greener society.
Listed in its pre-election Manifesto are measures to deliver 40 per cent low-carbon electricity by 2020, which it expects will create around 400,000 new green jobs within the next five years.
Reiterating the party’s ambitions to become waste-free it also suggests banning recyclable and biodegradable materials from landfill.
Under the proposals, new street recycling bins would be rolled out across the UK, to encourage on-the-go recycling.
The development of the UK’s recycling capabilities, as detailed in the manifesto, will create not only employment but also a wave of investment in the industry.
Suppliers of bulk handling machinery could benefit from the various initiatives as it is likely to spark the creation of new waste handling facilities across Britain.
Outlining its proposals, Labour said the challenge for the next government is "to be on track for the transition to a low-carbon economy in a way that is fair, secure and helps create the jobs of the future, as we protect and enhance our natural environment and quality of life".
