The food industry is being urged to encourage healthy eating in a bid to boost the nation’s consumption of fresh fruit and veg.

In a bit to raise awareness of the benefits of British-grown produce, Nigel Jenney, chief executive of the Fresh Produce Consortium is to hold an industry conference next week at the joint HDC/Stockbridge Technology Centre, Horticulture Weekly reports.

Selling a Healthier Future: Strategies for Increasing Consumption of Fruit and Vegetables in the UK is open to firms involved across the food manufacturing and processing industries.

Mr Jenner told the news provider he hopes the conference will instigate further promotions on the benefits of purchasing fresh produce.

Meanwhile, the Food Standards Agency recently proposed that healthier eating should be made more accessible to consumers.

It advised that the levels of fat, sugar and salt are cut in ‘unhealthy’ foods such as cakes and biscuits and that single-size smaller portions should be made available.
