Over the coming years there will be an increasing shift towards the use of sustainable biofuels.
According to aviation magazine Aircraft Maintenance Technology (AMT), "all the pieces are in place" for biofuels to become the primary fuel source.
"Airlines, regulatory organizations, fuel companies, and investors are all working toward the same goal: certifying a product and finding a cost-effective process to supply and manufacture the product," it comments.
The expansion of the industry is having a positive effect on manufacturers and professionals involved in various aspects of the sector.
In particular, as more and more biofuel facilities spring up across the UK, this is placing a demand on suppliers of bulk handling machinery such as elevators and valves.
AMT reveals that the aviation industry is demonstrating a key desire for biojet fuel in line with the European Union’s mandate that transportation fuels must consist of 10 per cent biofuel by 2020.
In addition, scientists are constantly pursuing new and effective ways to produce biofuel from biomass, with recent suggestions for sourcing including seaweed, tobacco and food waste.
