A new study out today (April 16th) heaps praise on the Scots for their recycling efforts.

As part of the Zero Waste Campaign, the Scottish government revealed that residents in the Highlands are recycling more than ever and have made substantial improvements over the past decade.

It showed that the nation has already exceeded its 2009-2010 targets for cutting the amount of waste sent to landfill, with 67 per cent of all newspapers and magazines and 60 per cent of glass bottles now passing through recycling centres.

Environment secretary Richard Lochhead said: "Most waste sent to landfill should be viewed as a resource and put to good use."

Moving forward, he said he would like to see recycling efforts mirrored over the next ten years, in a bid to drastically cut the amount of municipal waste.

New waste handling facilities, featuring all the latest machinery such as screw conveyors and heavy-duty conveyors, could therefore be in the pipeline as Scotland expands its recycling capabilities.
