Residents living in some areas of Bristol will be able to access two mixed plastic recycling initiatives being rolled out today.

The first of the schemes, a kerbside collection of home plastic waste, is being extended to 175,000 homes in the city.

People living within the allocated areas will be provided with a plastic sack, which they can use to recycle products such as drinks bottles, meat trays and yoghurt pots.

Bristol City Council is also providing communal recycling points across the region where people can deposit their plastic goods.

So-called on-the-go recycling facilities featured heavily in Labour’s pre-election manifesto.

Under the party’s proposals, new street recycling bins would be placed across the UK, in a step to cut the amount of municipal waste sent to landfil.

The Bristol-based trial will continue through to the end of the year before being further considered by the council, potentially creating additional business for the bulk materials handling sector.

Tracey Morgan, service director for environment and leisure, said: "We’ll use the results of the trial scheme to inform our new waste contract, which begins next November 2011."
