Food processing and manufacturing facilities may be forced to expand production in order to cope with an increase in demand.

According to the latest statistics from the Food and Drink Federation (FDF), UK exports of food and non-alcoholic drinks hit an all-time high in 2009.

For the fifth year running the FDF reported a growth in export levels, with value increasing by 4.4 per cent last year to reach £9.65 billion.

Britain’s burgeoning food industry could therefore see a rapid expansion in order to cope with the high purchasing levels from overseas importers.

Firms in the powder handling and storage industry may also benefit from the boom in business, potentially resulting in them taking on additional employees and machinery, such as mobile loading hoppers and flexible bulk containers, to cope with increased production.

Sainsbury’s chief executive Justin King recently remarked in the Times that he believes the future of British manufacturing lies with its food industry and called for greater investment in the sector.
