The demand for vegetarian cuisine is resulting in more veggie products rolling off the conveyor belts of UK food plants.

According to a recent report in the Tribune, catering providers around the world, including a plethora of British supermarkets, wholesalers and restaurants, are witnessing a boom in vegetarianism.

"Until recently, the options for those who decided to follow an alternative eating lifestyle were limited and sometimes not available at all," states the news provider.

However, it goes on to say that since the food industry has started "avidly listening to [its] customers" they are tapping into a new and exciting market opportunity.

US food chain Otarian recently announced it is to roll out three vegetarian, carbon-conscious eateries in London this year, further pushing the demand for meat-free produce.

Britain’s food industry continues to grow across the board and one of the reasons for this could be food manufacturers’ abilities to deliver products that cater to new or niche markets.

According to the latest statistics from the Food and Drink Federation, UK exports of food and non-alcoholic drinks hit an all-time high in 2009, reaching £9.65 billion in sales.
