Research showing the health benefits of consuming unsaturated fats could help to boost production of rapeseed in the UK.

Scientists from the University of Cordoba in Spain found a diet rich in the ‘Mediterranean juice’ olive oil can reduce inflammation in the body, thus cutting the risk of heart disease and type-2 diabetes.

However, June Davison, a cardiac nurse at the British Heart Foundation, said that it is not just Mediterranean oils that can be good for you, with rapeseed alternatives also providing the same properties.

"It supports current advice that it’s better to use unsaturated fats such as olive and rapeseed oil, over saturated fats such as butter, lard and ghee," she commented.

Northumberland-based rapeseed producer Oleifera recently received a £100,000 investment from Culinary Oils, a Nottinghamshire-based company specialising in fresh produce, to ramp up its productions.

According to NE Business, the partnership will set the firm on target to generate between £250,000 and £300,000 in profit in the first year.

Increasing Britain’s rapeseed market could create business for those in the bulk handling sector, as machinery such as flexible bulk containers are required to process additional products.
