The Irish Tobacco Manufacturers’ Advisory Committee (Itmac) has today warned people to be vigilant against counterfeit products.
According to Itmac, the ongoing sale of fake tobacco products in Ireland could accumulate in a 616 million euro (£540 million) loss in tax revenues, the Belfast Telegraph reports.
A spokesman told the news provider: "Fakes look just like the real thing, even down to the Irish health warnings and the Irish tax stamp.
"People need to be aware that even though it looks like the legitimate product it may not be."
The organisation’s comments come after authorities ceased a haul of illegal cigarettes, though to be worth an estimated three million euro (£2.6 million), that smugglers had attempted to pass through a Dublin port.
Acting to stamp out the illicit trade of fake goods could provide a welcome boost to the legitimate tobacco industry if it garners a sales increase.
This could help to stimulate growth in the industry, attracting jobs and creating the development of new manufacturing facilities.
