In addition to providing a welcome boost to the environment, increased recycling rates are helping local authorities to net substantial profits.

Council bosses in Exter have revealed that the city was able to make more than £1.2 million in savings through recycling household waste, thisisexter.co.uk reports.

This raised capital could be used to fund waste handling facilities, which are facing renewed pressure thanks to an influx in incoming materials.

Machinery such as heavy-duty conveyors may therefore soon be on the local council’s shopping list if its efforts to increase recycling rates are continued.

Mike Trim, the city’s head of cleansing services, told the news provider that Exeter’s recycling level of 36.2 per cent is well above the government-set target of 30 per cent for the area.

However, he commented that with the ongoing participation of residents, "we could achieve 40 per cent".

Items recycled at the Materials Recycling Facility at Marsh Barton are processed and sold to clients across the UK, with a rise in the recycling rate creating greater export potential.
