Heavy duty conveyors could be required at a quarry in Warwickshire, after plans to extend the site were approved.
According to the Evesham Journal, members of the Warwickshire County Council regulatory committee voted in favour of plans to extract 500,000 tonnes of sand and gravel from land at the Marsh Farm quarry in Dunnington over the next few years.
Under the terms of the approval, quarrying must begin within 18 months and be completed within three years of starting.

Construction of an anaerobic digestion facility claiming to be the biggest of its kind in Scotland has been given the go ahead.
Once operational, the West Lothian plant will be capable of processing 95,000 tonnes of municipal waste each year, MRW reports.
The local council’s planning committee gave the plans the nod following months of consideration and negotiations.

A Manchester-based brewery has seen profits more than double despite the challenging times facing the pub trade.
Stockport’s Frederic Robinson Brewery has today (May 27th) posted pre-tax profits of £3.2 million in the year leading to December 31st 2009, showing an increase of 52 per cent compared to the same period the previous year.
It brings the family-run business’s annual turnover to a cool £55.8 million and could give it the confidence to expand its brand across the region.

A pilot scheme to recycle kitchen waste in Leeds has been hailed a success.
Leeds City Council has seen the level of waste sent to landfill drastically reduced since it started collecting residents’ food and municipal waste 12 weeks ago, the Yorkshire Evening Post reports.
As a result of the kerbside collection scheme, weekly landfill contributions are currently 6.25 kg per home in Rothwell each week, compared to 10.52 kg for the average household in the wider Leeds area.

SITA UK has a made a bid to open an energy from waste facility in Scotland.
Proposals have been put forward to Perth and Kinross Council for a gasification plant, earmarked for a construction at Binn Farm, in rural Perthshire, STV reports.
The firm hope to take household municipal waste, as well as refuse from local businesses, which they would then heat in a giant sealed chamber to produce bioenergy.

Almost 200 jobs are to be created at a Tyneside-based food manufacturer which is rapidly expanding its production line.
Following a devastating fire at the site last year, Long Benton Foods reopened for business this January with an initial workforce of 60 employees.
But with the business once again in full swing, managers say they are hoping to take on an additional 180 members of staff to work on its line of frozen foods, which creates products under the Swedish brand Findus.

An independent Welsh bakery is celebrating after securing a contract to provide Tesco with cone-shaped cupcakes.
Berwyn Bakery, Bala, Gwynedd, which has been in business for more than 100 years and is one of the largest employers in the area, says the deal will allow it to significantly expand the business, the BBC reports.
The company has already announced that it will be adding to its 100-strong workforce, by taking on an additional 25 members of staff.

Chicken processing firm Moy Park is to acquire its rival O’Kane Poultry, to create what will be the UK’s biggest chicken producer.
The Northern Ireland-based firm announced today (May 26th) that it is to enter a merger following weeks of negotiations.
The two brands are working with Ulster Farmers’ Union to complete the partnership and have pledged to safeguard the majority of jobs held by the 8,500-strong workforce.

Scottish food giant Lees Foods has posted sweet profits for 2009 financial year.
The firm, which manages the Waverley Bakery and Lees of Scotland, most commonly associated with its popular confectionary line of Snowball teacakes, garnered net profits of £843,000 last year, more than double the figure seen in 2008.
Sales also increased, rising by £2.1 million year-on-year to reach £18.2 million, an increase of 13 per cent.
Chief executive Clive Miquel said the group’s future strategy would be to focus on introducing new products in order to meet the changing consumer demand, something that is already proving beneficial.
