Councils in Scotland are among the latest in the UK to roll out plastic recycling.

In a bid to encourage the one-in-five city residents who fail to recycle their rubbish, Edinburgh’s local authorities are to provide new kerbside collection bins, the Scotsman reports.

It follows a similar move by Bristol City Council, which last month extended its mixed plastic recycling schemes to homes across the borough.

Councillor Robert Aldridge, Edinburgh’s environment leader, told the news provider: "We need to make it as easy as possible to recycle. Most people want to but some find it difficult.

"We are looking at including other materials, which people want to see included."

He said the council has been keen to incorporate plastic recycling for some time but were restrained by the financial viability.

All of the main UK political parties have put recycling at the helm of their manifestos.

Labour has promised to create thousands of green jobs through the launch of waste handling facilities and bioscience centres, which will expand the waste to energy market.
