The Scottish food industry could be given a boost as the SNP pledges to support the fishing sector.

MSP Richard Lochhead revealed that Scotland’s fishing manufacturers represent around 70 per cent of the UK-wide fisheries industry, a statistic he says places them at the helm of EU trade.

"There can be no better illustration of the need for Scotland to be represented in the European Union as an independent nation," he stated.

His comments come as the SNP bids to attend talks on the future of European fisheries policy that are being held in Spain this week.

The convention is to include the presentation of a detailed report on the future of fishing, which could create new opportunities in Scotland’s food industry.

Mr Lochhead’s commitment to Scotland’s seafood sector could help to secure future investment, which is crucially important to Scotland’s food market as it seeks to become a major UK exporter.

If the industry continues to expand this could pave the way for new manufacturing and food processing facilities.
