Ireland’s food industry should and could be a global leader.

That was the clear message of Pathways for Growth, a report presented to Bord Bia – the Irish national food board – by professors at the Harvard Business School.

The study states that Ireland should adopt a strategy of developing a world-class agricultural industry by 2016, with the main ambition of becoming the most innovative and respected food-producing country in the world.

It seeks to position Ireland as a strong or main contender within the European market and claims that the demand for Irish produce will place its food manufacturers at the forefront of the export market.

Brendan Smith, minister for agriculture and food, said: "Ireland’s food and drink sector is well placed to contribute to the food needs and demands of millions beyond this island in a competitive and sustainable fashion."

Expanding the industry’s potential could bring welcome business to the powder handling and storage sector, if an increase in production is kick-started.

However, they will have strong competition from the UK, which is also committed to diversifying its presence on the global food market.
