A regional recycling scheme to offer kerbside collection across the Cotswolds could see the launch of a new waste handling plant.

Cotswold District Council (CDC) is working with the national waste contractor SITA to introduce new refuse collection plans that will see the company pick up all types of waste and recycling in a single transition, rather than on separate days, the Wilts and Gloucestershire Standard reports.

The move is expected to save the council around £70,000 per year which could be used to fund a new waste handling facility to cope with the increase in recyclable resources.

Any potential facility would need to be fitted with all the relevant sorting machinery such as chain and flight conveyors and heavy-duty conveyors.

CDC’s waste manager Scott Williams told the news provider that the current system of having various waste collected on different days was causing confusion with residents and therefore hindering their recycling efforts.

It is hoped the new simpler process would encourage people to recycle more of their refuse, which will inevitably place a demand on the waste processing sector.
