The opinion that Britain is a nation of budding recyclers was given weight today by new statistics which show more than two-thirds of us are regularly recycling.

According to statistics from the Department for the Environment Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), the UK achieved a 38.8 per cent household recycling rate for the year ending September 2009.

The figure could help to secure so-called green investment in the sector as it highlights the need for large-scale waste handling facilities.

Furthermore, with Britain bidding to become waste-free over the next couple of decades, the need for recycling facilities is only set to grow.

As well as providing welcome business to those involved in the industry, the improved rate has obvious benefits for the environment.

The DEFRA report revealed that the amount of municipal waste which ended up in landfill decreased from from 24.3 to 23.9 million tonnes year-on-year.
