Three independent bakers in Scotland are in talks to create a merger in order to safeguard jobs and boost operations.

Paul Allan, managing director of Murdoch Allan and Sons, announced the takeover of Stirlingshire-based Mathiesons Bakeries, with a view for the new company to partner with a third firm – Allan Bakers.

If approved, the merger would create what would be one of Scotland’s largest bakery companies, the Press and Journal Reports.

However, Mr Allan told the news provider he is keen for the companies to continue to operate under their existing identities and said that the move was instead geared towards protecting the 560 people employed throughout the firms.

"It is exciting that each of the three companies brings different specialist product knowledge and capabilities to the table so that in future we can offer the best of both worlds: a local presence with the support and back-up of a major national player," he explained.

The acquisition could lead to increased demand for the combined firm’s services, potentially paving the way for new food manufacturing sites.
