From humble beginnings, Greggs bakery has gone on to become one of the UK’s biggest names in the food industry.
And today (May 12th), the company reported that 2010 has already garnered some positive sales results for the firm, signalling that its future looks fresher than ever.
Greggs’s latest performance review shows that for the 18 weeks to May 8th, total sales increased by 2.6 per cent, highlighting a year-on-year gain of 0.6 per cent.
Commenting on the report, chairman Derek Netherton said the company is "well placed to deliver further growth in 2010".
Having started as a small, independent retailer in Tyneside some 80 years ago, the baking chain has gone on to achieve a nationwide presence, employing more than 19,000 people.
With a view to take on an additional 6,000 members of staff over the next four years as part of a rapid expansion programme, Greggs’s success is testament to the strength of the UK food market.
