Britain’s food industry may be given free reign to operate after a study concluded that biodiversity and food production are two separate areas of concern.

Researchers at the University of Leeds found that organic farming has limited benefits as, although it generated a 12.4 per cent increase in biodiversity, farms that adopted such practices saw crop yield decline by as much as half.

Professor Tim Benton, who led the study, said that in order to gain maximum results, those involved in the food industry must either focus their efforts on mass food production or on safeguarding biodiversity, but not on both.

This potentially gives food growers licence to increase productions in order to address global food shortages.

"To meet future demands of food production, we will need to keep farming our most productive areas in the most intensive way we can – and potentially offset that by managing some of our remaining land exclusively as wildlife reserves," he explained.
