An independent bakery based in Manchester has more than doubled in size after securing a large ‘slice’ of investment.

GH Sheldon received £2 million pound in funding from the Co-operative Bank, allowing it to roll out a large-scale expansion programme, resulting in the creation of some 200 jobs.

In addition, the firm has also seen its productions increase rapidly and now has a total of four regional sites, compared to just the one sole facility it had in operation three years ago.

Managing director Graham Sheldon commented that the investment would ensure they stay at the "forefront" of UK baking for years to come.

It seems to be a good week for the baking industry, with national chain Greggs yesterday posting positive sales results for the first quarter of the year.

In the 18 weeks to May 8th, the Tyneside-founded company saw total sales jump by 2.6 per cent, with an annual increase of 0.6 per cent, compared to the same period the previous year.
