A growing demand for eco-friendly foods could bring substantial profits to the UK food industry.
According to the Sustainable Restaurant Association (SRA), an increasing number of catering providers have begun to embrace environmentally-friendly practices as part of a wider awareness of green issues among the public.
"Businesses will always look to how they can increase their profits, and if they get more customers by adopting ‘eco-friendly’ practices, they will do so," revealed Simon Happner, SRA managing director.
However, he said it was important that the food industry did not simply offer the promise of sustainable goods without failing to deliver such products, as this could hinder custom.
Anna Hansen, chief patron at food firm The Modern Pantry, said consumers can personally boost business for the UK food sector by committing to shopping locally.
"Don’t buy fruit and veg from the supermarket, get it from the market, firstly you’re supporting local trade and also they won’t wrap it in unnecessary amounts of plastic when they give it to you," she advised.
