The newly empowered Conservative-Liberal Democrat government has unveiled its vision for the future of the food industry.
Detailed in its Coalition Programme for Government, are several measures affecting both the food production and food manufacturing sectors.
One of its main ambitions is to create a "sustainable" industry, which sources from British producers as far as possible and incorporates green practices in line with the UK’s efforts to slash CO2 emissions.
"We will ensure that food procured by government departments, and eventually the whole public sector, meets British standards of production wherever this can be achieved without increasing overall cost," stated the report.
The government also pledged to share responsibility with livestock keepers in a bid to prevent the outbreak of disease and stated that animal welfare will be at the forefront of developments.
Britain’s food industry is one its best performing sectors and is therefore one that has scope for a wealth of expansion and opportunities.
