Scotland’s food and drinks industry is to be served with a £300,000 boost as part of a government initiative to ramp up productions.
Under the leadership of Scotland Food & Drink, the investment will be used to help the nation’s food industry achieve an annual turnover of £12.5 billion by 2017.
Announcing the investment, rural affairs secretary Richard Lochhead, said: "Scotland’s thriving food and drink sector is one of our key economic strengths and genuine success stories."
On the menu for Scotland’s food future, he revealed, is a number of projects, including marketing schemes and the introduction of the Scottish Food & Drink Fortnight, an annual festival which aims to highlight the nation’s food manufacturing potential.
While he acknowledged that the £12.5 billion turnover target was ambitious, Mr Lochhead said that it is testament to the government’s hopes for Scotland’s booming food industry.
Through the investment, Scotland Food & Drink will also develop supply chain work to connect food processors and manufacturers with retailers, public and private catering establishments.
