Recycling has proved to be no wasted effort for one of the UK’s leading refuse handling firms.

Viridor today (May 25th) posted pre-tax profits of £55.4 million for the 2009-2010 financial year.

It shows an increase of 34.8 per cent compared to the previous year and is testament to the commercial business potential of waste management.

Company chairman Ken Harvey hailed it as another successful year for the group, with Viridor once again delivering what he coined a "very strong financial performance".

"The Greater Manchester Waste PFI contract, Lakeside Energy from Waste project and the latest acquisitions are further major steps forward in the successful evolution of Viridor into a resource recovery company," he remarked, attributing the firm’s success to a number of waste partnerships.

Viridor is part of the parent company Pennon Group plc, which subsequently revealed its pre-tax profit had jumped 14.2 per cent year-on-year to £189.1 million.
